Your essential intermittent fasting update

Intermittent fasting (or IF for short) is a hot diet trend that seems simple enough - cycle between periods of fasting and eating - for weight loss and health benefits.

But with the many IF variations (5:2, 16/8, Eat-Stop-Eat, etc) understanding the pros, cons, practicality and evidence for intermittent fasting is more complex in reality.

Join our panel of speakers, who are researching and testing IF for weight management, longevity and performance. Don't miss this cutting edge update on intermittent fasting.

The big questions

  • What exactly qualifies as intermittent fasting?
  • Is IF superior for weight loss and for who?
  • What are key personal insights about IF?
  • Are there any metabolic benefits?
  • Does IF come with any risks?
  • How does IF affect appetite?
  • Can you do IF and keep muscle?
  • Is intermittent fasting another diet fad or the future?

    Your speakers

    Assoc Prof Leonie Heilbronn

    BSc(Hons), PhD

Leonie is an Australian Research Council Future Fellow at the University of Adelaide and is based at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), where she leads the Obesity and Metabolism laboratory.

Dr Heilbronn completed her PhD studies in 2001, and went on to research positions in the United States and in Sydney, before returning to Adelaide in 2010. Her research is at the interface between basic and clinical science, and her research goal is to reduce chronic disease risk and insulin resistance through a greater understanding of nutrition and metabolism, and mechanisms underpinning these relationships particularly in muscle and adipose tissue.

In 2014 Leanie was awarded a Diabetes Australia Research Trust (DART) grant to study the "Effects of periodic fasting on the inflammatory profile in serum and adipose tissue." She has also received an NHMRC grant to investigate period fasting and insulin sensitivity and metabolic health.

She has published more than 75 peer reviewed papers in scientific journals, and is an associate editor for Obesity Research and Clinical Practice.

Her translational research into hypothalamic control of appetite, eating behavior, energy expenditure, body weight and body composition spans transgenic mice, adults with overweight or obesity, as well as adult athletes.

Her randomized controlled trials comparing long-term effects of fast versus slow weight loss – using intermittent versus continuous energy restriction – are funded by a Senior Research Fellowship and Project Grants from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) of Australia.

She is the author of two books about adult weight management that are available internationally in three languages and are used by consumers, community health centres / gyms, and by healthcare professionals..
